FAQ

What are marble terrazzo tiles?

They are tiles made from marble powder and chips, white cement and natural oxides, produced by Mipa in Italy. Marble, up to 80% recycled, is the main ingredient: these are not cement tiles.

Cement tiles (encaustic tiles) are made of pressed, coloured cement; Mipa does not make them. Mipa’s mix is vibrated, compacted under high pressure, cleared of excess water and air, and cured in chambers with controlled temperature and humidity. This lowers porosity and allows tiles just 11 mm thick. The slabs, made by Mipa, are laid and finished on site. Mipa has been making marble terrazzo since 1992.

Terrazzo vs cement tiles: what's the difference?

Mipa terrazzo is made of marble powder and chips bound with white cement and natural oxides; cement tiles are made of pressed, coloured cement. Mipa makes marble terrazzo only.

In terrazzo, marble is the main ingredient, up to 80% recycled, and it shows on the surface once the tile is ground. That is why terrazzo is ground, polished and cared for just like a marble floor.

Poured terrazzo vs terrazzo tiles: what's the difference?

Poured terrazzo, also called in-situ terrazzo, is cast and ground directly on site. Mipa makes tiles and slabs in marble terrazzo instead (graniglia, as it is called in Italy), which are laid and finished on site.

You get the look of a traditional Venetian floor, with colours and formats chosen from the catalogue or made to measure, and no casting on site.

What sizes do terrazzo tiles come in: 10x10, 20x20 or large format?

Solid colours and decors range from 10×10 to 20×20 cm, 11 mm thick; the Seeds and Slabs collections go up to 120×120 cm slabs, 20 mm thick.

Solid colours: 10×10, 10×20 and 20×20 cm, in 22 colours.
Decors (for example carpet decors, Optical Trips): 20×20 cm.
Thickness: 11 mm for the Light Lux, Light Mat, Light Bloom and Rock’n’roll finishes; 12.5 mm (±0.5) for the Classic finish.
Seeds and Slabs: 30×30, 30×60, 40×40, 40×80, 60×60, 60×120 and 120×120 cm, 20 mm thick; the 120×120 also comes in 30 mm. On request: custom sizes and material for kitchen worktops, stairs and special pieces.
Modulo: modular pieces 20 mm thick (for example 60×12, 60×20, 60×30, 60×60 cm).

Can terrazzo tiles be used outdoors?

Yes. Mipa marble terrazzo is used on terraces, porches, garden paths, pool surrounds, wall cladding, benches and accessories, in the same colours and formats as the indoor collections.

One example is a villa on Lake Garda, with solid colours in the Rock’n’roll finish laid around the pool. If a project calls for genuine natural stone (travertine, slate, ventilated façades), Mipa refers you to its partner Origine Pietra. Technical specifications for outdoor use, such as frost resistance and slip rating, are available on request.

How do you install terrazzo floor tiles?

Lay them with a C2 S1 deformable cementitious adhesive using double buttering, grout tone on tone after a pre-grout protector, and finish with a water- and oil-repellent treatment. Never use sand and cement mortar, never use acid cleaners.

The steps, following Mipa’s installation guide produced with Mapei:
1. A solid, flat and dry screed (for cement screeds, at least 7 days per centimetre of thickness), with joints as specified by UNI 11493-1.
2. C2 S1 adhesive such as Mapei KERAFLEX MAXI S1; above 60 cm (Slabs, Seeds), S2 adhesive.
3. Double buttering with a full adhesive bed, essential for heavy traffic and for tiles to be ground on site.
4. Bedding in with a white, non-marking rubber mallet.
5. Pre-grout protector (Mapei UltraCare Grout Release) and tone-on-tone grout, to avoid a frame effect around each tile.
6. End-of-job cleaning with a neutral detergent diluted about 1:30 (FILA CLEANER PRO or Mapei UltraCare Multicleaner).
7. Water- and oil-repellent protector (Mapei UltraCare Stain Protector W Plus), with optional gloss or matt wax. The Classic finish arrives pre-ground and is polished on site; the Light finishes arrive ready-finished. In the quote form you choose “Finished” or “To be ground on site”.

Does a terrazzo floor need polishing?

It depends on the finish. The Classic finish arrives pre-ground and is polished on site after laying; the Light finishes arrive ready-finished and need no grinding.

Either way, a water- and oil-repellent protector is applied at the end of the job, with optional gloss or matt wax. In the quote form you specify whether you want the material finished or to be ground on site.

How do you clean a terrazzo floor?

Sweep or vacuum, then wash with water and a neutral detergent such as FILA CLEANER PRO or Mapei UltraCare Multicleaner diluted about 1:200, with no rinsing. Always avoid acidic or harsh products: they dull marble permanently.

For grease and oily stains, use an alkaline degreaser such as Mapei UltraCare HD Cleaner, then rinse. Reapply the water- and oil-repellent treatment from time to time.

Can I get terrazzo tiles in custom colours?

Yes. With the Custom Colour System, a web app for computer or tablet, you can recolour every decor in the Mipa collections and see the effect on the laying pattern straight away.

Pick the laying pattern, assign decors and solid colours to each area and check the preview. The final file can be exported and used in 3D renderings too. For projects, Mipa’s in-house design studio develops bespoke colour proposals: aggregate mix, matrix colour, chip size and density. Custom decors and Custom Colour System colours are priced on quotation.

Can I get samples before ordering?

Yes. Sample kits for the Modulo, Seeds and Slabs collections are sold on the Mipa shop, in the sample kits section. You can also ask Mipa for samples directly.

Each collection has two sample formats: the Box, a 44×42 cm case, and the Roll, which measures 45×15 cm closed and 45×72 cm open. Both hold 7×10 cm pieces in the collection’s colours. Sample kits are paid, with the price shown on the shop page. For projects, the professionals team coordinates custom samples. Samples of decors and solid colours can be requested through the form on the Contacts page.

Is the quote free? How do I request one?

You can select several collections: Decors, Seeds, Slabs, Monomateria, Modulo, Patchwork, Solid colours, Washbasins. The quote covers the supply of the tiles; installation and subfloor preparation are separate.

Cement or epoxy terrazzo: does Mipa terrazzo contain resin?

No. Every Mipa collection is “resin free”: cement is the only binder. The terrazzo is made of up to 80% recycled marble.

The material is non-combustible, certified Class A1, and thanks to its composition it is exempt from VOC emission testing. For projects, technical documentation and EPDs are available on request.

Can terrazzo be used for stairs, countertops and washbasins?

Yes. Besides floor and wall tiles, Mipa makes stairs, worktops, washbasins, sinks, skirting, listellos, borders, tables and small objects such as centrepieces and doorstops in terrazzo.

With the Slabs and Seeds collections, material for kitchen worktops, stairs and special pieces is made on request. The in-house design studio handles custom projects and bespoke decors.

Do you work with architects and interior designers?
